One of the members of the DES research group, Lassi Nieminen, visited University of Jyväskylä for the Celebrities of Gaming – conference. Lassi presented his study on “eSport fandom in South Korean Internet cafés (PC Bangs)” on the second day of the conference. Lassi’s research extends the topic of his bachelor’s thesis on South Korean eSports: “The Gamer’s Haven – Cultural and Societal Support for eSports in South Korea”. Throughout the conference, Lassi had an opportunity to expand his network in the field of Game studies. In particular, he had the chance to meet one of the leading scholars on South Korean gaming culture, Florence Chee. Florence is currently working at University of Loyola, Chicago, and is working on a book regarding South Korean gaming culture. Lassi and Florence discussed possible future collaboration.
